Let’s Propagate
Monstera deliciosa’s (Swiss cheese plant) is one of the most beautiful plants that I’ve laid eyes on. I recently got my hands on one for a very good price and couldn’t wait to watch it grow. To my surprise, the plant had root rot (insert crying emoji). Instead of tossing the whole plant, I decided to salvage what I could and propagate. Now, keep in mind, this was/is my first time prorogating but I figured it couldn’t be that hard. With this being my first time, I wanted to share some do’s and don’ts that helped me.
(Keep in mind these are my personal do’s and don’ts as I had no one helping me).
Tools used to propagate:
While there are proper resources to propagate, I simply used what I had in my possession.
Do not:
1. Keep propagated plant in shaded area
2. Keep propagated plant in the same water
Do:
1. Keep in moderate sunlight
2. Change water every few days
3. Monitor growth/changes (this is important)
4. Mist once a week
5. Gently rinse roots when changing out the water
The plant before propagation has started. Notice the only roots you see are the initial roots from the cutting.
17 days later, new roots!
Put the newly propagated plant into soil. This pic is from today (6/11/2020). I’ve been monitoring the plant like crazy as the pieces came from an infected plant. I’m hoping the plant thrives and produces new stems. I will keep everyone posted on the progress the plant makes.
I hope this post helps someone who has been thinking about propagating a plant or two! If you have any tips you’d like to share, please share as I would love for this to be a learning experience for everyone!
Until next time,
Bee
